The earliest inhabitants of the region were the San (Bushmen), who lived here for thousands of years as hunter-gatherers. Their presence is still visible today in the form of remarkable rock art, found in caves and mountain shelters across the area.
During the 19th century, the region became a frontier zone as European settlers moved into the area, bringing conflict with local groups including the Basotho under Moshoeshoe I. These changes led to the gradual disappearance of the San people from the region.
Barkly East was officially established in 1874 and named after Sir Henry Barkly, then Governor of the Cape Colony. The town developed as a rural centre supporting farming and trade in this remote mountain landscape.
Over time, Barkly East became known for its Merino sheep farming, cool climate, and dramatic scenery. Today, it remains a peaceful agricultural town, often referred to as part of the Eastern Cape’s “Snow Country,” offering visitors a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
